BACKGROUND

When Kim Meredith was approached by Oshun Books, an imprint of Random House Struik (South Africa's largest non-fiction publishing company), to write for women in business along the lines of Suze Orman, Kim protested that she was not the ideal person to be writing financial books. Kim and Oshun agreed that to maximise her business experience, her books should address the dilemmas women face in the business world in general. The Work Diva was penned.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Work Diva: How to Climb the Corporate Ladder Without Selling Your Soul is a book for women, which addresses the challenges that the fairer gender encounters in the wicked world of business.

Work Diva examines the choices women face and decisions they need to make if they want to rise to the top of the corporate tree - from kids vs career, to developing mentors and life-long love affairs, to office romances and swearing in the workplace, and playing tea lady to male colleagues and bosses. In exploring these and many other subjects, Work Diva confronts stereotypes and holy cows alike, allowing the goddess in all women to be realised.

"Although you may well be told that inequality is a thing of the past, it's still very much a reality. Take this classic example. I joined a company in the late 1990s as Executive Director of Strategy. I was the only woman on a board of eight people but at the same level as my co-directors. First board meeting. The tea lady brings in a tray of tea and puts it down on the sideboard and leaves the room. Seven men look at me. I had a couple of choices:

• I could get up, help myself to tea and sit down again, offering no one else tea, or
• I could fit the stereotype and get up and pour for everyone, or
• I could look back at them and say "Well, who's going to pour?"

I got up and offered everyone tea. I can hear you shouting "Sell out!"

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Kim Meredith is an internationally acclaimed lecturer, strategist and dealmaker, as well as Chief Executive Officer of The Dealmaker Programmes Company.
