  • What does a car mean to you? Johannesburg hosted the International Motor Show this month. On display were the most innovative, stylish and advanced motor vehicles currently designed. There was everything from zero emission cars, to one with transparent sides, as well as the usual range of sports cars, luxury vehicles and 4 x 4s.

  • Recent illnesses, accidents and deaths in my circle of friends and family have made me realise anew how fragile and unpredictable life is. At the same time, my husband and I sat with our financial advisor and re-evaluated our economic future. This really drove home how vulnerable we all are when our income is dependent on our individual skills or our investment of time. The challenge is to be disciplined in "fat" times, in order to ride out the "lean" times.

  • My Dad recently spent a week deep sea fishing off the coast of Mozambique. He told me of an incident where the fishermen had an enormous fish as bait, attached to several hooks, connected to steel trace, wound around a heavyweight reel. They were dragging it along the ocean bed hoping to attract some gigantic groper - which is what they did!

  • Paris Hilton has a new reality show which revolves around her choosing her next BFF (Best Friend Forever - for the uninformed). The five minutes that I watched of it was enough to make me feel slightly ill. It was rife with the sycophantic adulation that is indicative of the celebrity cult of today. But it made me wonder whether we earn or deserve a BFF?
